How it works

Discount first, tax second — that’s the order real registers use. A $240 jacket at 30% off becomes $168, and 8.25% tax applies to the discounted price ($13.86), for a final of $181.86. The “you save” line is the honest number: the discount alone, before tax. With a quantity above one, savings and the final total cover the whole purchase while sale price and tax stay per item.

Everyday examples

Black Friday stacking: “extra 20% off already-reduced prices” — take both discounts sequentially: $100 with 30% off is $70, and a further 20% off is $56, which is not the same as 50% off. Common tax rates: US state rates run from 0% (Oregon, Delaware, New Hampshire, Montana) to over 9% combined in places like California and Washington; enter your local combined rate for accuracy. “X% off plus tax” questions are exactly what this tool answers in one pass.
